I have always worn Hush Puppies as a really comfortable, reasonably rugged shoe that doesn't look like a trainer. My old ones finally wore out after many years of trusty service so I was delighted to see that Hush Puppies still did a very similar model. And true to form they fit like a soft, comfortable puppy. However the comparison ends there.
The company has decided to take its revenge on their customers who have unreasonably benefitted from total foot comfort for too long. They have gone "high tech" on the heel, creating a weird, coffin shaped slot in the bottom of the heel about 2 inches long, half an inch wide and maybe one third of an inch deep (50mm x 10mm x 8mm for metric sorts). If you have young children you'll recognise this as a kind of reverse of the irritating slot for hidden dolls that seems to ensure that your kids get into trouble at school.
Simple maths indicates that this slot will hold about 4-5g of dog mess, about 100 million faecal coliform bacteria, waiting to spread themselves over your carpets! Normal soles pretty much self clean with a bit of scuffing and wiping on the grass - but not these. These require nothing short of manual excavation - perfect for arriving at a vital interview or dinner with the in-laws!
If that's not bad enough the slot is ideal for trapping razor sharp flinty stones (an ice skating version of the heely!) which then indelibly score your friend's cherished polished oak floor. You tip toe away, hoping they don't notice, and manage to extricate the stone, but in the process get your fingers covered with disease ridden chewing gum, which was also wedged in there.
To add further insult to damage and disease the slot serves to transfer your weight to the edges of your heel. This has the effect of making the shoes uncomfortable, after a while, on hard surfaces - a bit like strapping egg-cups to your feet so your weight is transferred to a ring around your heel rather than evenly over the whole heel. Why would anyone want to do this?
I'm not finished yet! The centre of the heel where it isn't just hole, is a very soft malleable plastic. I now await the excruciating pain of a thorn, sharp flint or piece or broken glass which will surely stab me eventually. Maybe my first heel stabbing will be a hepatitis and HIV infected needle, who knows?
Well done Hush Puppy - you've created a something totally not fit for purpose out of what was a really, really good product.
